Smile is the best medicine:)

According to research, Laughing or smiling reduce stress and boost your energy. Plus, when a person is smiling, he/she makes others smile because laughter is infectious. Therefore, As a great leader, smile is necessary to make others be in a good environment. What I will introduce you is not really associated with becoming a great leader, but in order to make you smile, this video will help you. I hope everyone will get surprised that unknowingly smile while watching this video.

Baby Laughing Hysterically at Ripping Paper

It makes funnier understanding background of this video. The papers baby and his papa ripping were papa's job rejection letter. Probably the baby is laughing because the sound of ripping is funny, but it seems to laugh at father's job rejection. So ironic!

Anyway, the video made you smile, right?

HBR: Social Intelligence and the Biology of Leadership

(What I am going to talk about is little bit off topic...) Comparing Japanese and westerners, I personally think that Japanese tend to be less aggressive and put themselves in ambiguous position. In a good way, those are part of Japanese culture that say something indirectly (imply meaning) and strongly care about how others think (something like reading air?), rather than say directly what you want to say. Conversely westerners more likely to be "straight talker". I strongly felt this difference when I went out Japan. I had to say directly if I want to claim my idea. If I express ambiguously, nobody understood and grasp my idea. The problem occurred when I came back to Japan, friends around me looked uncomfortable when I say something directly as I did in oversea. I was forgetting Japanese ambiguous culture, then I realized that I got used to westerner's way of expressing and feel uneasy when I talk to Japanese. However, since I now live in Japan, behaving like Japanese is sometimes necessary, otherwise I cannot get along with them.

Reading article from HBR, I kinda relieved that I am able to establish rapport if I under take hard work of changing behavior. Plus, I was very surprised that there is a person called Executive Coach who teach executives how to behave well as great leaders.  I cannot afford $2,200/h to develop my social intelligence, but recognizing its job is meaningful. It is very difficult to change behavior by myself, rather, I prefer friends alert me like "what you said was too much, you should say it more softly". Then, I will quickly realize my mistake and be able to practice social intelligence. As article mentioned, spending time with perfect model of person who has great behavior is really effective. He/she stimulate mirror neuron and provide great example to mimic. I would really like to observe models and acquire those behaviors and be a GREAT leader:)!

WSJ: Strike a Powerful Pose

blahblahblahblah...
As a leader, expressing power or strength to the followers is necessary in order to be in top and lead them. If leaders look weak or nervous, followers probably have doubt whether they should really be  under those leaders or not. according to WSJ, some pose express one's confidence and strength, and some are not. For example, leaning forward while talking makes speaker feel more confident. Then, listeners more pay attention to that person and likely to be convinced because of its pose. Conversely, crossing arms and legs express that person's nervousness and tend to lose listeners' attention. Most of the time, people unconsciously make poses, poses embody personal emotions. However, according to WSJ, it is possible to control own emotions by making certain kinds of pose. In other words, it is possible to express any kinds of emotions only by making poses. If you want to look more confidentiat, make pose of leaning forward or stand firmly with both legs, then naturally you look full of confident AND you really feel confident.

http://blogs.terrapinn.com/total-learning/files/2012/05/leadership11.jpgBefore reading this article, I did not know that poses have significant meaning and functions to control one's emotions! To become the great leader, make oneself look stronger is essential. Through some activities in class such as handshake and making eye contacts, we learned how to look ourselves better. I realized posture (how other people see us) is one of the significant elements of leadership.

Handshake: "Brief, Warm, Firm"

Before starting RW, I could not really imagine what kind of class would be like. Since the name of this class is Research Writing, I was thinking about studying some writing methods (if so, I probably be bored).

So I was a little bit surprised beginning class with learning handshake, but learning not only theoretical, but also practical things are worth for me because leadership is not something we just learn, something that we can apply on a daily basis. Learning 3 key points of handshake "Brief, Warm, Firm", I was shocked I did not understand how to shake hands, and the importance of it which good handshake gives a good impression to others and vice versa as Ken said. Including me, Japanese tend to bow and do not really shake hands when meeting people (maybe it has been changing today though). Therefore, everything was new for me and very striking. I hope I could acquire good handshake and be able to apply it when I have a chance from now on.

About Myself

Hi, everyone!
The very first day when I entered class, I already be familiar with some of classmates. However, there still be some I met and spoke for the first time. Sooo, I just briefly introduce myself, I hope this will help you to understand me:)? maybe not:P

I am from section 2B and belong to the circle called LAMBS. Many people wonder why I chose it because samba is not popular in Japan. The reason is that I have huge interests in Brazilian culture. I used to live in Brazil for two years and I was very shocked how different countries Japan and Brazil are. two years were too short for me and I regret that I could do something more. So I joined LAMBS!

Next year, the World Cup and in 2016 the Olympic will be held in Brazil. Now, Brazilian culture is booming! (I guess?)
